I2 Lewis Structure

Two iodine atoms share one electron pair in an I–I single bond. Each iodine keeps three lone pairs, producing complete octets and zero formal charges.

I2 overview

The Lewis electron pattern is the same as F₂, Cl₂ and Br₂: one bond plus three lone pairs on each atom. The diagram does not show iodine's larger atomic size.

How to draw I2

  1. Count 14 valence electrons.
  2. Draw one I–I single bond.
  3. Distribute three lone pairs to each iodine.
  4. Check the electron total, octets and formal charges.

Lewis structure limits

The Lewis diagram records pair placement. It does not explain iodine's color, phase, polarizability or detailed molecular orbitals.

Common mistakes

  • Using an I=I double bond.
  • Drawing only one lone pair per iodine.
  • Adding an ionic charge.
  • Confusing I₂ with iodide, I⁻.
